The Ecological Culture Initiative (ECI) is creating a Heritage Garden as St. Joseph’s Villa in Hampton Bays.  We plan to cultivate not only a community of plants, but also people, through providing an opportunity to learn traditional organic gardening as well as ecosystem gardening techniques, habitat restoration, and localized food production. Meet the staff of ECI, enjoy the outdoors, and visit Historic St. Joseph’s Villa – a faith based retreat center.

OPTIONAL: bring your work gloves and boots to chip in with the garden crew

Instruction offered at the Heritage teaching Garden will include but not be limited to:

  • Cultivating Native American, Colonial and ethnic plants for food & medicine
  • Composting / building healthy soils for agriculture, storm-water filtration and carbon sequestration
  • Rain Harvest / conservation based irrigation & rain filtration
  • Restoring endangered native biodiversity and developing botanically themed landscapes that contribute to water conservation, fire resistance, erosion control, wildlife habitat, etc.
  • Attracting beneficial wildlife via use of native plants for pest control

Meet the staff of ECI, enjoy a day of work outdoors, and visit the historic St. Joseph’s Villa – a faith based retreat center.
