An in-depth class series featuring all the basic skills and knowledge needed to develop a bio-intensive vegetable garden from the ground up. Topics will include permaculture design and application, soil analysis and amendments, compost preparation, plant propagation, rain harvesting and irrigation, organic pest and disease management, edible natives, pollinators, seed saving, and winterization.

Divided into four distinct units of eight classes each, which need not be taken in consecutive order, students who complete the whole series of 32 classes will be rewarded with a certificate in organic gardening, presented by the Ecological Culture Initiative.

The course will be a combination of both classroom instruction and fieldwork.  Students should be prepared to work outdoors during some sessions. 

Instructors: Rachel Stephens and Marc Fasanella (with additional guest lecturers).

All instruction will take place on Friday Evenings β€’ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm. Additional field work (optional) can be scheduled on Saturdays β€’ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm.

Curriculum Schedule for 2018

Organic Garden Design & Seed Propagation, March 30 – May 18
Soil Science, Plant Health & Rain Harvest, May 25 – July 13
Native Plants, Pollinators & Food Forests, July 20 – Sept 7
Harvesting, Seed Saving & Winterizing, Sept 14 – Nov 2

Age: 16 - Seniors

Place: Lodge at Squiretown Park, 62 Red Creek Road, Hampton Bays

Fee per Unit: $240 Southampton Town resident,  $250 non-resident (8 classes). Total fee for the full Program: $960 Southampton Town resident, $1000 non-resident (32 classes).  There is an additional $30 fee for each unit which covers materials and literature.
